On June 24th 2026, Dr. Eliud Kiprop presented a thought-provoking Lunch and Learn session at Lakeland University Japan’s Muskie Hall, titled, Contested Futures of Higher Education in the Age of Generative AI: A Comparative Analysis of Stakeholder AI Discourse (2019–2026). Analyzing a massive data corpus of 379 educational YouTube videos totaling nearly 1.25 million words, Dr. Kiprop collaborated with international professors from Tokyo University of Science in Japan, Zetech University in Kenya and Southwest University in China to map how different global stakeholders are reacting to the rapid integration of artificial intelligence.

The Evolution of AI Discourse and Methodology

To understand how AI evolved from a specialized technology into a mainstream societal force, Dr. Kiprop and his research team utilized Python to extract public transcripts, performing rigorous corpus statistics, lexical analysis, and thematic analysis. The findings revealed a dramatic shift in global discourse:

2019–2020 (AI as Infrastructure): The tone was highly optimistic, viewing AI primarily as a specialized educational and tutoring tool.

2021–2022 (AI as Enhancement): The discourse matured into a pragmatic approach, focusing on enhancement.

2023–2024 (Generative AI Disruption): Following the widespread release of generative models, the tone shifted to cautious, treating AI as a massive disruptive force.

2025–2026 (Institutional Adaptation): Current discussions have adopted a strategic tone, focusing heavily on how institutions must navigate and implement the new AI landscape.

The Four Stakeholder Perspectives

Dr Kiprop explained that as AI becomes a major societal issue, understanding how different groups interpret its impact is critical. The research compared four key stakeholder groups, revealing widely varying priorities:

Education Specialists and Learning Experts: Initially optimistic, educators have become highly cautious and strategic. Their primary concerns revolve around students, academic integrity, assessment, and pedagogical support.

Industry Leaders and Tech Executives: Maintaining a pragmatic and opportunity-oriented tone, this group focuses on business value, enterprise disruption, workforce skills, and human-AI collaboration.

Policy and Research Institutions: Organizations like UNESCO and the OECD have shifted from cautious optimism to action-oriented policy building, focusing heavily on AI governance, ethical frameworks, regulation, and systemic adaptation.

AI Creators and Tech Influencers: Representing the fastest adopters, this group is highly enthusiastic. They show the least concern for educational risks and focus heavily on technical capabilities, coding, and entrepreneurial empowerment.

The Liberal Arts Advantage in the AI Era

One of the most dynamic moments of the seminar occurred during the Q&A session, which sparked a debate regarding who truly benefits most from generative AI. While many assume science and engineering students have the upper hand, Dr. Kiprop presented a compelling counter-argument: Liberal Arts students might be the biggest beneficiaries of AI tools.

Historically, Liberal Arts students have excelled in soft skills, such as critical thinking, leadership, and communication, but may have lacked specialized technical skills like coding. Dr. Kiprop believes that generative AI is able to bridges this technical gap. He explained that because complex coding and data analysis are now easily accessible via AI, students with strong communication and critical thinking skills can use AI to execute technical tasks. This makes them incredibly empowered in areas like entrepreneurship, allowing them to seamlessly execute their creative and strategic visions.

Academic Rigor, Student Benefits, and Institutional Impact

For LUJ undergraduate and postgraduate students, engaging in these high-level academic seminars offers profound, real-world developmental benefits. By analyzing how different sectors view artificial intelligence, students gain a strategic understanding of the modern workforce. Addressing questions on how to implement AI in teaching, Dr. Kiprop noted that the tone in education has shifted from resistance to acceptance, meaning the focus must now be on the best strategies for adoption. LUJ’s robust Liberal Arts curriculum ensures that students develop irreplaceable human skills while learning to confidently command AI as a technical tool. This holistic approach ensures that LUJ graduates are not intimidated by technological disruption, but are uniquely equipped to lead the future of human-AI collaboration.

Lakeland University Japan’s Lunch and Learn sessions are open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Written by Yingzhu Lai

On June 23rd, 2026, Lakeland University Japan (LUJ) welcomed Dr. Manabu Sawaguchi to present to postgraduate students as part of Professor Yasuaki Mori’s postgraduate course, LO710 –Leadership Seminar: Systems Theory, Adaptive and Servant Leadership. Dr. Sawaguchi serves as a Professor at the Graduate School of Technology Management at Ritsumeikan University. He brings a formidable academic and corporate background to the classroom, having graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Keio University and completed his Doctoral Program (Ph.D. in Engineering) at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering at Waseda University. Following his work for a major steel trading company, he joined the Value Management Center at Sanno University, further solidifying his expertise in enterprise management.

A central theme of Dr. Sawaguchi’s presentation was the rapid evolution of engineers against the backdrop of Japan’s current socioeconomic challenges, which include stagnation in capital expenditures, an accelerating aging population with declining birth rates, and a stagnation in advanced technological progress.

To navigate these challenges, Dr. Sawaguchi outlined the changing profile of engineers across three distinct generations. The First Generation consisted of Field-Oriented and Cost-Conscious Engineers who focused on quality assurance, delivery, and price guarantees. The Second Generation evolved into Customer-Focused and Environmentally Conscious Engineers, prioritizing safety and environmental assurance. Today, industry demands the Third Generation: The Future-Oriented Engineer, who must identify potential requirements and navigate the VUCA era, characterized by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity.

To thrive in this complex landscape, Dr. Sawaguchi stressed that high-performing employees require three essential skills: Pure Technologies (cutting-edge, job-specific abilities), HRM Skills (interpersonal skills for smooth organizational operations), and MOT (Management of Technology) Methods, which focus on problem-solving and issue-resolution abilities. Dr. Sawaguchi noted that MOT Methods are his primary area of research.

He challenged students to understand innovation in a broad sense by exploring foundational classifications. This included Joseph Schumpeter’s five types of innovation (Product, Process, Market, Supply Chain, and Organizational), Clayton Christensen’s framework of Sustaining and Disruptive Innovation, and Henry Chesbrough’s concepts of Open and Closed Innovation. By mastering these frameworks, professionals can better balance corporate objectives, successfully contributing to society while ensuring corporate prosperity and profit generation through strategic pricing, volume increases, or cost reduction.

Dr. Sawaguchi introduced students to highly advanced concepts in product development and value engineering. He observed that Japanese companies and societies are sometimes attracted to the concept of “Convenience Harm,” a state where unintended, convenient factors actually manifest as harm for a significant number of people, leading to the invention of many inconvenient products over time. Utilizing the Kano Model, he explained that while many engineers struggle with indifferent and reverse quality, there is a profound new concept emerging in product development known as the “Inconvenience-benefit”. To effectively drive these new values from strategy to execution, he highlighted the Four Domain Model of Leadership, which encompasses Strategy Execution, Goal Achievement, Talent Development, and Value Creation.

For LUJ undergraduate and postgraduate students, attending these elite Leadership Seminars offers unparalleled d developmental benefits. By interacting directly with a leading engineering and technology management scholar like Dr. Sawaguchi, students gain a highly practical understanding of how complex operational theories and MOT methods are applied to overcome macroeconomic challenges. Students benefit immensely by learning to map technological evolution against sociological shifts, equipping them to lead effectively in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) corporate landscape. Furthermore, they develop deep executive insight into how innovative product realization and nuanced concepts like the “Inconvenience-benefit” intersect to solve modern industrial issues, directly complementing the rigorous strategic frameworks taught in their M.B.A. and M.S. coursework.

Lakeland University Japan’s Leadership Seminars are open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Written by Yingzhu Lai

Lakeland University Japan (LUJ) gladly welcomed Mr. Shinichiro Mita to present to postgraduate students as part of the esteemed LO710 –Leadership Seminar: Systems Theory, Adaptive and Servant Leadership series. Serving as the General Manager of the Overseas Mineral Resources Business Department at Nittetsu Mining Co., Ltd., Mr. Mita is recognized as a driving force behind the global modernization of his company.

His presentation offered profound insights into leading a strategic shift from a traditional domestic miner to an aggressive international competitor. Mr. Mita shared his expansive career trajectory, which began in accounting and financing before moving to corporate strategy, metals sales, and eventually serving as the General Manager of a Chilean subsidiary after working on the construction of a copper mine in Chile. Through these experiences, he developed his core philosophy: the “Spirit of Challenge”. He advocated that even legacy industrial firms must innovate and take calculated risks to remain relevant in a volatile global market.

Putting this philosophy into action, Mr. Mita orchestrated the acquisition of major copper projects in Chile and Peru, securing essential resources vital for the global green energy transition. Furthermore, he oversees complex metallurgical and feasibility studies to ensure sustainable and high-yield mineral extraction across the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region. Through this leadership, he is credited with shifting his company’s corporate culture from a “stable, risk-averse” mindset to one defined by “proactive growth and challenge”.

To successfully navigate international expansion, Mr. Mita detailed his two primary leadership missions: acting as an internal Change Agent and an external Bridge Builder. Internally, he addressed the “Management Mismatch” of having two different cultures within one company, a domestic focus on limestone and an overseas focus on copper. He successfully engineered a mindset shift by helping his team overcome resilience to change, status quo bias, and loss aversion.

Externally, as a Bridge Builder, Mr. Mita specializes in high-stakes joint ventures that bridge the gap between Japanese industrial expertise (which emphasizes world-class technology and long-term planning) and international junior exploration firms (which utilize speed, aggressive tactics, and diverse financial options). By integrating local partners for community relationships and building diverse, multilingual teams focused on intercultural communication and global mobility, he ensures seamless cross-cultural collaboration.

Reminding students that “Leadership is a never-ending journey,” Mr. Mita offered grounded, practical advice for navigating high-pressure corporate environments. When facing immense challenges, his approach centers on patience and perspective: “When I meet difficulties, I don’t choose anything, just wait. And over it with time”. He also encouraged the postgraduate students to stay present in their work, advising them not to worry too much about the final outcomes of a project, but instead to focus intensely on the process they are currently working on.

By interacting directly with a global executive like Mr. Mita, LUJ postgraduate students gain a highly practical understanding of how to execute complex corporate strategies and navigate international cultural exchanges. Students benefit immensely by learning how to bridge the gap between diverse mindsets and manage the transition of legacy domestic firms into competitive global entities. Furthermore, they develop deep executive insight into the practical applications of cross-cultural communication, joint-venture management, and strategy execution, directly complementing the rigorous strategic and organizational leadership frameworks taught in their M.B.A. and M.S. coursework.

Lakeland University Japan’s Leadership Seminars are open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Written by Yingzhu Lai

Lakeland University Japan (LUJ) welcomed Mr. Makoto Noda to present to postgraduate students on June 9th 2026, as part of this summer’s Leadership Seminars. Mr. Noda is the CEO of Legato Ltd and serves as an advisor for Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) and is the company’s former General Manager of the Innovation Department.

Mr. Noda was invited to speak as part of Professor Yasuaki Mori’s postgraduate course, LO710 –Leadership Seminar: Systems Theory, Adaptive and Servant Leadership. . Delivered with the translation assistance of LUJ Vice President, Dr. Anderson Passos, the presentation offered profound insights into global business strategy, cross-cultural management, and corporate innovation. After graduating from the Department of Chinese Language at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies in 1984 and working for a specialty valve manufacturer, Mr. Noda joined KHI in 1989. By 1992, he became the youngest overseas office manager at the company’s overseas headquarters. During a 13-year tenure in China, he led localization initiatives and established KHI’s first local subsidiary.

In 2017, Mr. Noda proposed and established KHI’s Innovation Department, eventually collaborating with over 1,300 startup companies to identify synergies, develop new opportunities, and promote an internal culture of innovation. He shared several guiding principles with the students, including the beliefs that “Open minds drive innovation,” and that “In 30 years, humanity will be the value” to corporations.

A central focus of the seminar was training the entrepreneurial spirit. Mr. Noda challenged the audience to rethink how business ideas are formed, noting that an idea is not merely a concept, but something created in the middle of strategy and decision-making. To navigate this, he outlined four key methods of thinking:

● Design Thinking to understand market needs and solve problems.
● Creative Thinking to generate ideas without framework boundaries.
● Logical Thinking to draw conclusions based on data and facts.
● Bias Thinking to eliminate unconscious bias and analyze trends.

Students were introduced to a structured methodology for business planning, starting from finding a dream or issue, converting it into a concrete idea, designing the business plan, and developing a core business model. Mr. Noda emphasized that a comprehensive plan must evaluate customer needs, market size, the surrounding ecosystem, and competitive frameworks like SWOT and Porter’s Five Forces. Ultimately, the goal of this process is to organize and clarify the business so it can be effectively conveyed to a growth ecosystem.

For LUJ undergraduate and postgraduate students, attending these Leadership Seminars offers real-world insights. By engaging directly with an executive who successfully bridged a legacy industrial giant with over 1,300 agile startups, students gain a highly practical understanding of how to foster development in modern corporate environments. Connecting with seasoned experts like Mr. Noda allows students to refine their own entrepreneurial ideas and develop the specialized strategic thinking required to navigate global markets and emerging technologies, directly elevating their M.B.A. and M.S. academic experience.

Lakeland University Japan’s Leadership Seminars are open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Mr. Kanetoshi currently serves as the Executive Director of the Water Materials and Overseas Division at Mitsubishi Chemical. He holds undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees from Waseda University.

Mr. Kanetoshi was invited to speak as part of Professor Yasuaki Mori’s postgraduate Leadership Seminar course on June 3rd, 2026. His presentation provided students with a deep dive into the evolving role of Japanese industry, global manufacturing, and the future of sustainable technological development. Mitsubishi Chemical is a leading global company that develops technologies supporting healthcare, sustainability, electronics, mobility, and environmental solutions.

To help students contextualize these ideals, he guided the class through a comprehensive Leadership Questionnaire, breaking the concept down into six distinct categories: Traits, Ability, Skill, Behavior, Relationship, and Process. Through this exercise, he addressed common misconceptions that often hold potential leaders back, such as the belief that one must be a “superstar” or hold a high-ranking position to exercise leadership. Instead, he reinforced that leadership could be anyone, and that there is no single right answer, as different leaders possess niche abilities and skills depending on the person.

Transitioning from personal reflection to academic theory, Mr. Kanetoshi highlighted how the definition of leadership has evolved over time, noting that there have been more than 200 different definitions since 1900. He referenced Professor Bernard Bass’s 1990 definition, focusing on how leadership occurs when a group member modifies the motivation or competencies of others. He explained that leadership terminology today, whether Servant, Shared, Situational, Transactional, or Transformational, is as broad and complex as words like “democracy, love, and peace”.

Bringing this complexity into the new era of corporate strategy, he used Amazon’s 14 “Leadership Principles” as a modern example of how diverse leadership traits are shared globally. To prepare for these corporate realities, Mr. Kanetoshi outlined essential elements for training one’s own leadership capabilities: the ability to act proactively, interact and communicate with people, think deeply, understand the world, and apply self-analysis skills.

For LUJ undergraduate and postgraduate students, attending these elite Leadership Seminars offers unparalleled, real-world benefits. By interacting directly with industry titans like Mr. Kanetoshi, who has consistently achieved annual sales targets and pioneered new global markets since 2011, students gain a practical understanding of how theoretical frameworks operate in multi-billion-dollar global enterprises. Specifically, students benefit by networking face-to-face with an executive who actively promotes the co-creation of new businesses through collaboration with diverse stakeholders. This interaction allows them to observe how theoretical models of leadership directly influence corporate strategy, sales operations, and market development. Furthermore, they develop deep executive insight into how science, technology, and business innovation intersect to solve complex social and industrial challenges, which directly complements their rigorous M.B.A. and M.S. coursework.

Lakeland University Japan’s Leadership Seminars are open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

On 30th May, 2026 Vice President Dr. Anderson Passos, Dr. Eliud Kiprop and Ms. Ruth Lionberger warmly welcomed a faculty and student delegation from Strathmore University in Nairobi, Kenya to Lakeland University Japan’s Tokyo campus. Dr. Kiprop conveyed his hope that this delegation would serve as the foundation for a formalized partnership between the two universities.

Hosting Strathmore University is a product in LUJ’s continued globalization efforts which aim to expand opportunities for students and faculty to a truly international scale and Dr Kiprop expressed his intention that both parties seize the opportunity presented to develop deep bonds for long term academic collaboration. “Given Strathmore University’s strengths in business and entrepreneurship, I believe there are many opportunities for joint innovation activities beyond traditional academic research. “ Dr. Kiprop said, continuing, “Strathmore’s students remarked that they had not expected an international university in Japan to place such importance on Japanese cultural education, and they appreciated how LUJ integrates local culture into the student experience.”

The delegation from Strathmore University was led by Dean of Students, Mr. Paul Ochieng, Senior Lecturer, Dr. Caroline Kariuki, Dr. Titus Orwa, Lecturer from the Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Mr. Raymond Ochieng, Lecturer from Strathmore University.

LUJ was proud to include presentations from postgraduate students Mara Peppermuller and Benjamin Emmanuel Aniereobi, who recently won the 2026 LUJ Innovation Challenge, in Association with SusHi Tech 2026, for the presentation of his corporate start-up Rirakkusu Japan.

Dr. Kiprop described how impressed he was with Strathmore University’s experiential learning program, saying “Their students are expected to complete a substantial number of practical hours (approximately 400 hours), many of them in informal settlements and low-income communities. This approach gives students meaningful real-world experience while allowing them to make a tangible impact on society.”

Strathmore University was founded in 1961 as the first educational institution in pre-independence Kenya to accommodate all races, religions, and social standings. Having grown to boast a student population of over 8,000, Strathmore is consistently ranked as one of Kenya’s top private universities and everyone at LUJ extends their thanks to the faculty and staff who travelled so far to join us for a short time in Tokyo!

Written by Yingzhu Lai

On May 26th 2026, Lakeland University Japan (LUJ) proudly welcomed Ms. Yumiko Watanabe, Chairperson of the certified NPO KidsDoor, to present to postgraduate students as part of this summer’s Leadership Seminars. Ms. Watanabe is recognized as one of Japan’s leading advocates for educational equity and child welfare.

Ms. Watanabe was invited to speak as part of Professor Yasuaki Mori’s postgraduate course, LO710 –Leadership Seminar: Systems Theory, Adaptive and Servant Leadership. After a successful career in marketing and publishing, she founded KidsDoor in 2007 to support children from low-income families through free educational programs, mentoring, and safe community spaces. Today, under her leadership, KidsDoor is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing child poverty and educational inequality across Japan.

A central theme of the seminar was the visibility and impact of child poverty in Japan, an issue that became increasingly observed following the 2008 financial crisis. Ms. Watanabe outlined the devastating cycle of poverty: children in low-income households receive limited educational support , which prevents them from progressing to high school or university , thereby restricting their employment options and ultimately returning them to a low-income status.

The presentation highlighted severe educational barriers faced by these families, including the inability to buy reference books or afford mock exams. Environmental challenges also play a massive role, with many children lacking a quiet private room to concentrate , adequate internet access , or a computer at home. Furthermore, single-parent households or families where parents work double or triple shifts often cannot provide academic mentorship at home. The correlation between wealth and education is stark; Ms. Watanabe shared data showing that households earning around 94,000 USD or more have a significantly higher chance of academic achievement in math and Japanese courses compared to households earning between 13,000 and 19,000 USD.

To break this cycle forever, KidsDoor focuses heavily on educational support and expanding employment opportunities. The organization’s impact is vast: data from the fall semester of 2024 shows they helped a total of 2,112 students , with a cumulative 212 accepted by universities and vocational schools. KidsDoor currently supports 4,932 households and operates 66 places for learning support. Ms. Watanabe noted that a donation of approximately 60,000 US dollars can operate one study room for a year.

Leadership in this sector requires immense resilience and systemic advocacy. Ms. Watanabe has served on numerous government advisory panels and has participated in roundtable dialogues with Prime Minister Kishida and Minister of State Ogura regarding policies related to children. Despite this, she expressed profound frustration and empathy during the seminar. She shared a personal story about a hard-working single mother who lacks food fees, noting that she feels bad, alone, and depressed because the government does not focus enough on this issue and relies heavily on NPOs without providing enough subsidies to help families pass through difficult durations.

Students benefit by networking with industry and policy leaders and engaging face-to-face with experts who advise the Japanese Cabinet and Prime Minister, allowing students to build powerful professional networks before graduation. They’re also able to applying academic frameworks to observing how complex societal issues, such as systemic poverty and wealth distribution, require adaptive leadership and structural solutions, directly complementing their M.B.A. and M.S. coursework. This program also encourages LUJ students to develop executive empathy and learn the critical role of servant leadership by understanding the human realities behind social policies and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

On May 19th 2026, Lakeland University Japan (LUJ) was honored to welcome Ms. Sarah Belousov, Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy Tokyo, to present to postgraduate students as part of this summer’s Leadership Seminars.

Ms. Belousov presented as part of Professor Yasuaki Mori’s postgraduate course, LO710 –Leadership Seminar: Systems Theory, Adaptive and Servant Leadership. Rather than leading the session with a formal presentation, Ms. Belousov cultivated a relaxing and friendly atmosphere, opting not to use a PowerPoint or a prepared speech. Instead, she guided the audience through an interactive cycle of poll quizzes and idea sharing.

The session’s central theme explored the relationship between culture and leadership. Ms. Belousov challenged students to reflect on what behaviors signify strong leadership in their respective cultures, which behaviors are misunderstood by outsiders, and what personal strengths they bring to the table. The open atmosphere encouraged participants from China, the Philippines, Germany, Brazil, Japan, and the U.S. to naturally exchange personal stories.

Several dynamic cross-cultural insights emerged during the seminar:
● A former U.S. Navy member discussed the importance of publicly admitting mistakes to build trust and accountability.
● Chinese participants emphasized that leadership involves sacrifice, responsibility, and caring for others without expecting rewards.
● German and Filipino participants analyzed the differences in communication styles, specifically the balance between directness and emotional sensitivity.
● Brazilian participants highlighted that they often look to sports, rather than politics, for ethical role models.

The Human-Centered Diplomat

A major takeaway from the session was that leadership is not simply about power, titles, or holding management positions. Ms. Belousov emphasized that leadership appears in small, everyday actions when people actively support, guide, or inspire others. She framed leadership as a deeply human and relationship-centered endeavor.

Drawing on her diplomatic background, Ms. Belousov distinguished between leadership and management, explaining that real-world professionals must balance both simultaneously. She shared that diplomatic work often involves tension between meeting strict institutional responsibilities and caring for people on a personal level. Ultimately, she explained that diplomacy is built on long-term relationships, mutual understanding, and public service. Universal core values, such as empathy, emotional intelligence, trust, and adaptability, serve as the crucial “key” enabling international cooperation among diverse backgrounds.

LUJ students continue to benefit from the guidance of renowned international faculty like Professor Mori, who in 2025 was inducted into Japan’s national order for distinguished public servants, the Order of the Sacred Treasure. As an American university in Tokyo, LUJ’s Leadership Seminars follow a proud liberal arts tradition that prioritizes connecting students with real-world experts.

By hosting diplomatic leaders like Ms. Belousov, Lakeland University Japan continues to solidify its position as a leading international university for executive education. This high-impact seminar directly advances UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by bridging intercultural dialogue with academic rigor. Furthermore, by equipping students in the M.B.A. and M.S. in Leadership programs with advanced cross-cultural perspectives, LUJ actively champions SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), ensuring the next generation of global leaders is prepared to thrive internationally.

Written by Yingzhu Lai

On May 12th 2026, Lakeland University Japan was proud to welcome Mr. Keito Ochi, CEO of High Bridge Institute, to present to postgraduate students as part of this summer’s Leadership Seminars. Mr. Ochi, who describes himself as an Artificial Intelligence Anthropologist, presented on the topic of AI Civilizational Transformation and the Future of Humanity. His talk explored an array of dynamic themes, from how wealth and AI technology interact to theoretical evaluations as to whether AI will develop what humans understand as consciousness.

Mr. Ochi was invited to speak as part of Professor Yasuaki Mori’s postgraduate course, LO710 –Leadership Seminar: Systems Theory, Adaptive and Servant Leadership. In 2025, Professor Mori was inducted into Japan’s national order for distinguished public servants, 瑞宝章 (the Order of the Sacred Treasure). LUJ students benefit from the guidance and expertise of renowned international faculty, such as Professor Mori, with all undergraduate and postgraduate classes taught in English.

Mr. Ochi was able to share with students the cutting-edge AI industry insights that he has developed as CEO of High Bridge Institute and as a policy advisor to multiple Japanese government offices. This included a spirited debate among the audience, which Mr. Ochi led, as to whether AI would achieve consciousness, and if so, when, and what form that would take. Mr. Ochi theorized that consciousness is an evolutionary advancement in living beings to ensure survival and advanced decision-making, and that perhaps AI could eventually develop awareness if placed in environments requiring adaptation and learning.

As an American university in Tokyo, LUJ’s Leadership Seminars follow the long tradition of liberal arts education, which strongly emphasizes the importance of real-world experts sharing their knowledge as part of students’ academic experience. Former Lakeland University expert speakers include President John F. Kennedy, who spoke to students about International Relations on March 30th, 1960, and his daughter, the former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, who addressed Lakeland University Japan graduates in August 2016.

By hosting visionaries like Mr. Keito Ochi to dissect the intersection of artificial intelligence, state policy, and human evolution, Lakeland University Japan continues to solidify its position as a leading international university in Tokyo for cutting-edge technology and executive education. This high-impact seminar directly advances UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by bridging elite industry insight with academic rigor. Furthermore, by equipping undergraduate and postgraduate students across its American B.S. in Data Science, M.B.A., and M.S. in Leadership programs with advanced tech-anthropological perspectives, LUJ actively champions SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), ensuring the next generation of global leaders is uniquely prepared to thrive in the face of the ongoing AI civilizational transformation.
