The U.S. Embassy Explores Theories of Leadership with LUJ Postgraduate Students
Written by Yingzhu Lai
On May 19th 2026, Lakeland University Japan (LUJ) was honored to welcome Ms. Sarah Belousov, Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy Tokyo, to present to postgraduate students as part of this summer’s Leadership Seminars.
Ms. Belousov presented as part of Professor Yasuaki Mori’s postgraduate course, LO710 –Leadership Seminar: Systems Theory, Adaptive and Servant Leadership. Rather than leading the session with a formal presentation, Ms. Belousov cultivated a relaxing and friendly atmosphere, opting not to use a PowerPoint or a prepared speech. Instead, she guided the audience through an interactive cycle of poll quizzes and idea sharing.

The session’s central theme explored the relationship between culture and leadership. Ms. Belousov challenged students to reflect on what behaviors signify strong leadership in their respective cultures, which behaviors are misunderstood by outsiders, and what personal strengths they bring to the table. The open atmosphere encouraged participants from China, the Philippines, Germany, Brazil, Japan, and the U.S. to naturally exchange personal stories.
Several dynamic cross-cultural insights emerged during the seminar:
● A former U.S. Navy member discussed the importance of publicly admitting mistakes to build trust and accountability.
● Chinese participants emphasized that leadership involves sacrifice, responsibility, and caring for others without expecting rewards.
● German and Filipino participants analyzed the differences in communication styles, specifically the balance between directness and emotional sensitivity.
● Brazilian participants highlighted that they often look to sports, rather than politics, for ethical role models.
The Human-Centered Diplomat
A major takeaway from the session was that leadership is not simply about power, titles, or holding management positions. Ms. Belousov emphasized that leadership appears in small, everyday actions when people actively support, guide, or inspire others. She framed leadership as a deeply human and relationship-centered endeavor.
Drawing on her diplomatic background, Ms. Belousov distinguished between leadership and management, explaining that real-world professionals must balance both simultaneously. She shared that diplomatic work often involves tension between meeting strict institutional responsibilities and caring for people on a personal level. Ultimately, she explained that diplomacy is built on long-term relationships, mutual understanding, and public service. Universal core values, such as empathy, emotional intelligence, trust, and adaptability, serve as the crucial “key” enabling international cooperation among diverse backgrounds.
